Development Trend of Coil Automation Equipment: Wide-format Inline Continuous Processing

Traditional single-piece coil processing involves complicated procedures and heavy labor input. Fully automatic wide-format inline coil machines covering 50–200mm widths have become the industry mainstream. Equipped with red-light positioning, water-cooled constant-temperature laser sources and high-speed vision modules, they support 24-hour non-stop mass production and are widely used in lithium battery and packaging tape industries.

In early years, processing of lithium battery insulation tapes, printing films and foam coils mostly adopted the single-piece cutting mode. Procedures including raw material slitting, single-piece loading, processing and manual rewinding relied heavily on labor. Tedious material handling pushed up labor costs and limited productivity. In addition, single-piece cutting easily leads to dimensional errors and material waste, failing to meet demands for large-scale continuous manufacturing.

Driven by integrated advances in machinery, laser and vision technologies, fully automatic wide-format inline coil equipment has become the primary upgrade direction. Compatible with coil raw materials ranging from 50mm to 200mm, the machine realizes unattended integrated workflow including unwinding, deviation correction, laser processing, visual inspection and automatic rewinding. Only one operator is required to monitor materials for the whole line, greatly cutting labor expenditure.

Standard core configurations include high-precision servo edge guiding to prevent coil deviation, red-light CCD automatic positioning system delivering stable ±0.05mm machining accuracy, water-cooled constant-temperature laser generators ensuring steady power output during long-hour operation, and rear high-speed vision modules that detect defects in real time and automatically reject faulty coils. The complete unit supports 7×24-hour continuous operation with far higher equipment efficiency than outdated single-piece processing machinery.

Strong market demand exists in two key sectors: processing of PI/PET insulation films and separators for new energy lithium batteries; and slitting & marking of double-sided adhesive tapes, protective films and printed films in the packaging industry. Going forward, coil automation equipment will keep evolving toward wider processing width, higher speed and deeper integration of laser and vision systems, making it a core R&D focus for automation manufacturers.
